An AI caption generator is only as good as what you tell it. Give it "write a caption for my café" and you get the same sunny filler as everyone else. Give it your offer, your audience, your tone and one real detail, and the first draft is usually 80% there.
So this post is mostly prompts: 18 of them, grouped by niche (café, salon, real estate, e-commerce, creator, plus a few that work anywhere), each with an example of what comes back. Paste them into any free AI Instagram caption generator with hashtags, or into a general chatbot, and swap the brackets for your details.
You'll also get Instagram's current hashtag rule, which changed: the limit is now 5 per post. And a short, honest look at the free tools.
The short version
Feed the AI four things every time: offer, audience, tone and one specific detail.
Instagram's help center now allows up to 5 hashtags per post, so pick them carefully.
Free options include ChatGPT's free plan, Hootsuite's free caption tool, Buffer's AI Assistant and GoBrandIt's free plan.
Always edit the first line, cut the clichés and check facts like prices and dates.
How to make an AI caption generator sound like your brand
Before any prompt, write a short brand block and paste it at the top every time (or save it once, if your tool supports a brand voice). Four lines is enough:
Who you are: "Family-run bakery in Lalitpur, open since 2015."
Who it's for: "Office workers grabbing breakfast, parents ordering birthday cakes."
How you sound: "Warm, a bit cheeky, short sentences, no corporate words."
Never say: "Indulge, delightful, mouth-watering, any emoji other than one at the end."
Then add one specific detail to every request. "New cardamom bun, Rs. 120, out of the oven at 7 am" beats "promote our new product" every time. Specifics are what make a caption feel written by a person.
Tip
Ask for 3 options in different lengths. You'll often take the first line from one and the ending from another.
18 copy-paste prompts by niche, with example outputs
Swap anything in [brackets]. Each example output is what a good first draft looks like, before your edit.
Café and restaurant
1. Write an Instagram caption announcing [new menu item] at [price]. Lead with the taste, not the price. Under 40 words, end with a question.
2. Write a caption for a behind-the-scenes Reel of [staff member] making [item]. Make the person the hero. Two short paragraphs.
3. Write a rainy-day caption inviting people in for [drink]. Mention [neighbourhood]. Playful, under 30 words.
Example output (prompt 1): "Smoky, a little sweet, and gone by noon yesterday. Our new jaggery cold brew is back today at Rs. 280. Iced or over milk, how are you having it?"
Salon and beauty
1. Write a before-and-after carousel caption for [service]. Credit the stylist, include how long it took, and add a booking line.
2. Write a caption answering the question "[common client question]" in plain language. Friendly expert tone.
3. Write a caption filling last-minute slots for [day]. Urgent but not pushy, under 35 words.
Example output (prompt 3): "Two chairs just opened up for Saturday afternoon. Blow-dry, trim or a quick colour refresh. Message us before they're gone!"
Real estate
1. Write a listing caption for a [type] in [area]: [3 key features], [price or 'price on request']. Lead with the best feature, not the bedroom count.
2. Write a caption for a neighbourhood guide post about [area], covering coffee, schools and commute. Helpful, not salesy.
3. Write a caption sharing one tip for first-time buyers about [topic]. End with an invitation to message for a free chat.
Example output (prompt 1): "Morning sun in every room and a rooftop that looks straight at the hills. 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, 5 minutes from the ring road. Price on request. DM for a viewing."
E-commerce
1. Write a product caption for [product]. Lead with the problem it solves for [customer]. Include one material or size detail.
2. Write a caption for a customer-photo repost. Thank them by @handle, add one line on why people love [product].
3. Write a caption for a [percentage]% off sale ending [day]. Clear dates, no fake urgency.
Example output (prompt 3): "20% off every tote until Sunday midnight. Same stitched leather, same lifetime repairs, smaller price. Link in bio."
Creators
1. Write a hook-first caption for a Reel about [topic]. First line under 8 words, then 2 lines of context, then a save prompt.
2. Turn this rough voice note into an Instagram caption without losing my words: [paste transcript].
3. Write a caption for a carousel listing [number] mistakes about [topic]. Tease the most surprising one.
Example output (prompt 1): "I wasted Rs. 40,000 on this. Here's what the trek gear shops won't tell you before Annapurna. Save this for your packing list."
Works for any business
1. Rewrite this caption so it sounds like [brand block]. Keep the facts, cut 30% of the words: [paste caption].
2. Give me 5 first lines for this caption, each using a different angle: question, number, bold claim, story, quote.
3. Suggest 8 hashtags for this caption, split into broad, niche and local. I'll pick 5: [paste caption].
Instagram hashtag rules in 2026
This is the part most caption guides still get wrong. Instagram's help center now says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, and a post with more won't go through. The old 30-hashtag habit is over.
Hashtags can go in the caption or in a comment.
Posts from private accounts don't show on public hashtag pages.
Numbers work in hashtags. Spaces and characters like $ or % don't.
You can only tag your own posts.
With 5 slots, we'd use them like this: one or two niche tags (#kathmandufood), one local tag (#patan), one tag your customers actually search, and one branded tag if you have one. Our full Instagram hashtag strategy guide covers picking and testing sets.
Tip
When the AI suggests hashtags, ask for more than you need and pick 5 yourself. It doesn't know which tags your customers use.

Hootsuite's free AI caption generator is genuinely handy for a one-off: pick a network, a tone and a language (English, Spanish, Italian, French or German) and go. If you post daily, a tool that remembers your voice saves more time.
Edit before you post: a 60-second checklist
1. Read the first line alone. Would it stop your own thumb?
2. Delete words you'd never say out loud ("indulge", "unforgettable experience").
3. Check every fact: price, date, opening hours, spelling of names.
4. Make sure the call to action matches the post: book, order, save or comment, not all four.
5. Pick your 5 hashtags and drop any that are only there for volume.
6. Add alt text for the image so screen readers can describe it.

Writing captions in GoBrandIt
In GoBrandIt you describe your business, personality and tone once in Brand Voice (or let Autocomplete with AI draft it), and every AI caption writes in that voice. The AI assistant handles captions, hashtags, rewrites and alt text, and you can save your best hashtag sets as hashtag groups to reuse.
The free plan includes 50 AI credits a month; a short caption costs under 1 credit. When the caption's ready, schedule it straight to Instagram as a feed post, Reel or Story. See the AI content assistant or how to schedule Instagram posts.
Try captions in your own Brand Voice
Set up Brand Voice, paste one of the prompts above, and schedule the result to Instagram. Free plan, no card.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free AI Instagram caption generator with hashtags?
The best one is the one you can give your brand context to. ChatGPT's free plan, Buffer's AI Assistant and GoBrandIt's free plan all work; pick hashtags yourself from what they suggest.
How many hashtags should I use on Instagram in 2026?
Up to 5. Instagram's help center says that's the limit per post, and posts with more won't publish.
Are AI-written captions bad for reach?
We haven't seen Instagram say it treats AI-written captions differently. Generic captions tend to perform badly whoever writes them, so edit for specifics.
Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?
Instagram allows both. We'd keep them in the caption so they're there from the moment the post goes live.
How long can an Instagram caption be?
Instagram's developer docs put the caption limit at 2,200 characters. For most business posts, the first line matters far more than the length.
