A good social media post designer gets you from blank screen to finished post in about five minutes: pick a template in the right size, drop in your logo and colours, change the words, swap the photo, export or schedule. You don't need design training, and you don't need to pay to start. Canva, Adobe Express and GoBrandIt's Social Designer all have free plans.
This guide walks through the five-minute routine step by step, gives you a sizes table so you never post a cropped image again, and shows how to set up a brand kit, handle Nepali and English text, and use AI to fill in the words. At the end we compare the main free online social media post designer with AI options, including where each one falls short.
The short version
Start from a template in the size you'll post. Choosing the size first saves the most time.
Set up a brand kit once (logo, two or three colours, two fonts) and every post looks like yours.
Use AI to draft the words on a template, then check every price, date and name yourself.
Canva and Adobe Express are strong free designers; GoBrandIt adds scheduling and Nepali type in the same place.
Design a post in 5 minutes
Here's the routine we use for a standard offer or announcement post. Time yourself the first time; by the third post you'll be under five minutes.
1. Minute 1, pick the size and template. Choose where the post is going first (feed, Story, Pin), then filter templates to that size. Pick one with roughly the right amount of text.
2. Minute 2, apply your brand kit. One click should swap the template's colours and fonts for yours and drop in your logo.
3. Minute 3, write the words. A headline of seven words or fewer, one supporting line, and a call to action. Or let AI fill the template from a one-line brief.
4. Minute 4, swap the photo. Use your own product or venue photo where you can. Remove or blur busy backgrounds behind text.
5. Minute 5, check and send. Look at it on your phone at arm's length, fix anything you can't read in two seconds, then export or schedule it.
Tip
Make a second size while you're there. A feed post and a matching Story from the same design takes one extra minute.
Social media post sizes to pick before you start
Instagram's help center says feed photos keep their quality at up to 1080 pixels wide when the ratio is between 1.91:1 and 4:5; anything outside that is cropped. Pinterest recommends 2:3 at 1000 x 1500 for Pins. Meta's ads guide uses 9:16 for Stories. Those rules give you a short list:
Size
Ratio
Pixels
Use it for
Square
1:1
1080 x 1080
Instagram and Facebook feed, carousels
Portrait
4:5
1080 x 1350
Instagram and Facebook feed (our default)
Story / Reel cover
9:16
1080 x 1920
Stories on Instagram and Facebook
Wide
1.91:1
1080 x 566
Wide feed images, link images
Pin
2:3
1000 x 1500
If you only make one size, make 4:5 portrait. It takes up more of the phone screen than a square on both Instagram and Facebook. For Stories, keep text out of the top and bottom of the frame, where the profile icon and reply bar sit. Meta's ads guide suggests leaving roughly the top 14% and bottom 35% clear.
Set up your brand kit once
A brand kit is the difference between "nice template" and "that's clearly from the Thamel café we follow". It takes fifteen minutes to set up and pays off on every post after that.
Logo: a version for light backgrounds and one for dark. PNG with a transparent background.
Colours: two or three, written as hex codes. One main colour, one accent, one neutral.
Fonts: one for headlines, one for body text. If you post in Nepali, add a Devanagari font that sits well next to your English one.
A photo style: a note for yourself, such as "daylight, wooden tables, no filters". It keeps your photos consistent even when different people take them.
Then stick to it. The fastest way to make a feed look messy is to try a new font every week.
Designing posts in Nepali and English
Bilingual posts are normal for businesses in Nepal and for diaspora brands, and they're easy to get wrong. A few habits help:
Put each language in its own text box. You can then size and align them separately.
Pick a Devanagari font with a similar weight to your English font, so neither line looks shouty.
Use Unicode Nepali text. If your copy came from an old Preeti document, convert it first, or it'll appear as random Latin letters.
Check conjunct letters and matras after you paste. Zoom in before you export.
Keep the Nepali line short on festival posts. "शुभ दशैं" with a clear visual beats a paragraph.
For caption ideas to go with these designs, our Nepali social media captions list has ready-made lines for festivals, offers and everyday posts.
Let AI fill the words (and when not to)
Most designers now offer an AI option that writes the text on a template for you. It works best when you give it a real brief, not a topic. Compare "Dashain sale" with "Dashain sale, 20% off all pashmina shawls, ends Sunday, for gift buyers, warm and friendly". The second gets you something you can post.
Where AI is still weak: exact numbers, dates, prices and names. It will happily write "30% off" when you said 20%. Read every figure before you schedule. And don't let it write a claim you can't stand behind, such as "best in Kathmandu".
Tip
Write one brief, ask for three versions, and pick the best headline. It's quicker than editing one weak draft.

Free social media post designer tools compared
If you're choosing a free online social media post designer with AI, these are the three we'd look at first. All have a free plan. We checked each company's own pricing page, such as Adobe Express pricing; limits change, so confirm before you commit.

Where the others are better: Canva covers far more than social posts (presentations, print, video), and its template library is much bigger than ours. Adobe Express is a good pick if your team already lives in Adobe. If your main job is getting posts designed and published on time, a designer that sits next to your calendar saves the export-download-upload step every single day.
Designing and scheduling in GoBrandIt
Social Designer is included on every GoBrandIt plan, including Free. You get 300+ templates for posts, Stories and carousels up to 10 pages, eight sizes (square, portrait, tall portrait, Story/Reel, wide, link image, Google Business and Pin), a Brand Kit for your logo, colours and fonts, and proper Devanagari type. "Design with AI" fills a template's words from your brief, and "Use in post" sends the finished design straight to the composer, where you schedule it to your connected accounts.
On paid plans with AI images (Creator and up, from $4.99 a month), you can also edit photos with AI, remove backgrounds and expand an image to fit a new size. Already designing in Canva? GoBrandIt connects to it too; see how to schedule Canva posts. The full list is on our features page.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free social media post designer?
Canva Free has the widest template range. Adobe Express Free is strong if you use Adobe fonts and stock. GoBrandIt's free Social Designer suits you if you want to design and schedule in one place, with Nepali type built in.
What size should a social media post be?
Use 1080 x 1350 (4:5) for Instagram and Facebook feeds, 1080 x 1920 (9:16) for Stories and 1000 x 1500 (2:3) for Pinterest. Square 1080 x 1080 also works on both Meta feeds.
Can AI design a social media post for me?
AI can fill a template's text from a short brief and suggest layouts, which gets you most of the way. Check every price, date and name it writes, and swap in your own photos where you can.
How do I add Nepali text to a social media post?
Use a designer that supports Devanagari fonts, type or paste Unicode Nepali text into its own text box, and zoom in to check conjuncts before you export. Convert old Preeti text to Unicode first.
Do I need a paid plan to design social media posts?
No. Canva, Adobe Express and GoBrandIt all have free plans that cover templates and basic editing. Paid plans add things like more AI, background removal and extra storage.
