Diwali social media marketing works when it's a plan, not a last-minute scramble. Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026 on the central government's holiday list, and Dussehra on Tuesday, 20 October. From mid-October that gives you about three and a half weeks: enough for a teaser week, an offer week, a gifting week and a festival week.
Below you'll find that four-week plan, Diwali social media post ideas for small businesses by type (shops, cafés, D2C brands, coaching centres, salons), how to run offer posts on Instagram, Facebook and Google Business Profile, greeting graphics that don't look like everyone else's, and a short note on disclosure if creators are part of your plan.
One India note first. TikTok has been blocked here since June 2020, so short video means Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. For the bigger picture on networks and tools, see our social media management India guide.
The short version
Diwali is Sunday, 8 November 2026 and Dussehra is Tuesday, 20 October, per the central government holiday list.
Run four weeks: teaser, offer launch, gifting, festival week. Schedule the first three weeks before the rush starts.
Put your offer on Google Business Profile too, not just Instagram and Facebook. Nearby buyers look there.
Gave a creator a free hamper? ASCI's guidelines say their post needs a clear label such as Ad or Collaboration.
Diwali 2026 dates to plan around
These dates come from the central government's 2026 holiday lists, issued under the DoPT office memorandum of 3 July 2025. Gazetted holidays are closed days for central government offices. Restricted holidays are optional ones employees can pick, but they're a useful guide to when customers will be celebrating.

A 4-week Diwali social media marketing plan

Aim for three to four feed posts a week, plus Stories most days. More than that and you'll be making content when you should be packing orders. If you'd rather sketch this out on a grid first, our free social media content calendar guide shows how.
Tip
Make the "last day to order for Diwali delivery" post in week one and schedule it for week three. It's the post most shops forget, and it saves you a pile of repeat DMs.
Diwali social media post ideas for small businesses, by type
Generic diya graphics get scrolled past. The Diwali social media post ideas for small businesses that work best show your own product, your own people and your own city. A few starting points:
A Jaipur handicrafts store
A Reel of one diya set being hand-painted, start to finish, in 30 seconds.
A carousel of five gifts for people who host Diwali at home.
A Collab post with a home-decor creator styling your pieces on a mantel (label it, see the ASCI section below).
A Story asking followers which colour of lantern to restock.
A Pune café or sweet shop
Pre-order post for gift boxes, with a clear cut-off date.
A Reel of the kitchen at 6 a.m. making the festive batch.
Diwali opening hours as a Story and a Google Business Profile update.
A thank-you post with photos from regulars (ask them first).
A Bengaluru D2C skincare brand
Gift set launch carousel: what's inside and who it's for.
A "festive week routine" Reel shot by your founder, not a model.
Customer reviews turned into simple quote graphics, with permission.
A shipping cut-off post for each region you deliver to.
A Lucknow coaching centre
Holiday schedule and batch restart date, pinned to the top of the grid.
A carousel: a five-day revision plan for the Diwali break.
A YouTube Short of teachers sending wishes, with one study tip each.
A salon or boutique
"Slots left this week" Stories that you update daily.
Before-and-after Reels of festive looks.
A Google Business Profile post with a Book button.
Offer posts on Instagram, Facebook and Google Business Profile
Your offer needs to live in three places, because buyers arrive from three directions.
Instagram: post the offer as a carousel, pin it to your grid, and share it to Stories. Instagram's Story stickers include a link sticker that takes people to your site and a countdown sticker that followers can set reminders on. A countdown to your sale's start is one of the most useful things you can post in week two.
Facebook: post the same offer with a slightly longer caption. Facebook still reaches older customers and local groups, and it's where your Meta ads run if you boost anything.
Google Business Profile: Google lets you create Offer posts with a title, start and end dates, and optional coupon code, link and terms. They get a "View Offer" button automatically. When someone nearby searches for "diwali gifts near me" or your shop's name, that offer can be the first thing they see.
Here's an example caption that does the job:
"Our Diwali gift boxes are here. 12 hand-painted diyas in a reusable wooden box, packed in Jaipur. Order by 1 November for delivery before Diwali. Tap the link in our bio, or DM us for bulk orders."
Notice what it includes: what it is, why it's special, the deadline and how to buy. Skip the paragraph about the festival of lights. Your customers know.
Diwali greeting graphics that don't look like everyone else's
Every business posts a greeting on Diwali morning. Most of them are the same stock diya with a logo in the corner. You'll stand out with very little extra effort:
Use a real photo: your shop lit up, your team in festive clothes, your product beside a rangoli.
Write the greeting in the language your customers speak. Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali: whatever fits.
Keep it to one greeting post. Five versions across the day reads as noise.
Make Story and square sizes in the same sitting so they match.
Add alt text so the post works for people using screen readers.

Working with creators this Diwali: the disclosure note
Diwali is gifting season, and a lot of brands send hampers to creators. Under the Advertising Standards Council of India's guidelines for influencer advertising, a free product counts as a material connection. If a creator posts about your gift, the post needs a disclosure label, even if you didn't ask them to post.
Permitted labels include Advertisement, Ad, Sponsored, Collaboration, Partnership, Free gift and Affiliate, plus Instagram's "Paid Partnership" tag.
The label must be upfront, not buried in a pile of hashtags or hidden behind "more".
For a picture or video with no caption, such as a Story, the label goes on the image itself.
Responsibility sits with the brand as well as the creator, so check the post when it goes live.
Put this in your brief to creators before the hamper ships. It's far easier than asking for an edit after the post is up.
Schedule Diwali once, then spend festival week in the inbox
GoBrandIt's dashboard has a "Plan the year" calendar of festivals, sale days and holidays by country. India's includes Diwali, Dussehra, Bhai Dooj, Chhath and Black Friday, and a festival countdown shows what's coming up. You can add your own events too, like a stock-arrival date or your sale launch.
From there, make greetings and offer graphics in the Social Designer (300+ templates, Devanagari type for Hindi text, your logo and colours in a Brand Kit). Then write one post with a separate version for Instagram, Facebook and Google Business Profile. Instagram posts can go to feed and Stories together, and Google Business Profile posts can be an Offer with a button like Order online or Book. During festival week, comments, DMs and Google reviews land in one inbox. The free plan covers 3 accounts and 15 scheduled posts, which is enough for a small shop's Diwali run.

Frequently asked questions
When is Diwali in 2026?
Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, according to the central government's gazetted holiday list. Dussehra is on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.
When should I start posting for Diwali?
Three to four weeks before. Use the first week to tease, launch your offer around Dussehra, and have everything scheduled before the last week so you can focus on orders and replies.
What should a small business post on Diwali day?
One greeting post using your own photo, plus a Story with your opening hours or delivery status. Save the hard sell for the weeks before.
Do creators need to label posts about Diwali gifts?
Yes. ASCI's guidelines treat a free product as a material connection, so the post needs an upfront label such as Ad, Collaboration or Free gift.
Can I post a Diwali offer on Google?
Yes. Google Business Profile has Offer posts with a title, dates and optional coupon code, link and terms, and adds a View Offer button.
