The best social media publishing tool is the one that covers all three jobs without hand-offs: creating the post, scheduling it, and actually publishing it on its own. Plenty of tools are great at one and weak at another. Some still send a phone reminder for Instagram Stories instead of posting them. Others schedule beautifully but leave design to a separate app.
We compared seven popular tools on those three jobs, plus team approvals and price, using each company's own pricing pages and help docs as of 13 October 2026. GoBrandIt is one of the seven, and it's our product, so we've been strict about where others beat us.
Our quick answer: Buffer for a solo creator who wants simple, GoBrandIt if you want the best tool to create, schedule and publish social media posts in one place on a small budget, and Hootsuite if you're a larger team with the budget for it.
The short version
Native publishing beats reminders; check Stories and Reels support on your account type.
Stickers, music and links on Instagram Stories need a phone reminder on every tool we checked.
Approvals usually sit on mid or top plans: Buffer Team, Later Growth, Metricool Advanced, Hootsuite Advanced.
Our picks: Buffer for solo simplicity, GoBrandIt for small teams and agencies, Hootsuite for large teams.
What makes a good social media publishing tool
We judged every tool on four things. A tool that's brilliant at scheduling but makes you design elsewhere and approve over WhatsApp isn't saving you as much time as it looks.
Create: AI writing, a design editor or templates, per-network versions of one post.
Schedule: calendar, queue with set posting times, recurring posts, sensible post limits.
Publish: posts go out on their own, including Instagram Stories, Reels and carousels, without a phone reminder.
Team: approvals, roles, client previews.
If you're new to this, our guide on how to post to multiple social media platforms covers the basics first.
Native publishing vs reminders: the catch nobody puts on the pricing page
Every scheduler talks to the networks through their official APIs, and the APIs don't allow everything. When a tool can't publish something directly, it sends a notification to your phone at the scheduled time and you finish the post in the app. That's a reminder, not publishing.
The common cases, from the tools' own help docs:
Story stickers, music and links: Buffer, Later and Metricool all switch to a notification when a Story needs them, because Instagram doesn't let third-party tools add them.
Account type: Buffer and Later need an Instagram business or creator profile for auto-publishing. Later and Publer auto-publish Stories for business profiles only.
Personal profiles: Buffer, Hootsuite and SocialPilot send reminders instead of publishing for personal Instagram profiles.
Tip
In any trial, schedule one Story, one Reel and one carousel to the account type you actually use. Ten minutes of testing tells you more than any feature grid.
Our own guide on how to schedule Instagram posts walks through the account setup that avoids most reminder fallbacks.

Why the scores land where they do
GoBrandIt scores highest on creating because design is built in: 300+ templates in 8 sizes, a Brand Kit, Nepali type, and "Design with AI", next to an AI writer that uses your Brand Voice. We lose a point on scheduling because our plans cap scheduled posts (15 on Free, 30 on Creator, 150 on Business), where Buffer's paid plans are unlimited. We lose one on publishing because LinkedIn Pages are still coming soon; LinkedIn profiles work today.
Hootsuite wins on teams, with approvals and message assignment on Advanced. Its plans page starts at $99 per user a month on annual billing, though, which is a lot for a small business.
Buffer is the cleanest scheduler here, with unlimited scheduled posts on paid plans and a free plan that's actually usable. Approvals are only on its Team plan.
SocialPilot includes content, client and manager approval workflows on Premium, which suits agencies. Metricool is the one to pick if analytics and competitor tracking matter as much as publishing. Later is strong for Instagram-led visual planning, though its Starter plan has 5 AI credits a month. Publer adds recurring posts and unlimited AI prompts on Business.
How GoBrandIt handles create, schedule and publish
One post, with a separate version for each network, a character counter per network, and a live preview. "Adapt with AI" rewrites it to suit each network. Design it in the Social Designer or pull it from Canva, then schedule, post now, or add it to your queue, which fills the times you set in your Posting Schedule.
Instagram and Facebook: feed post, Reel or Story, plus first comment and Instagram collaborators.
TikTok privacy, comments, Duet, Stitch and content disclosure; YouTube title and visibility; Pinterest board and link.
Google Business Profile posts, offers and events with buttons like Book or Call now.
Repeat a post on a schedule, share evergreen posts again, and retry failed posts on only the accounts that failed.
For teams, the approval workflow holds posts until they're signed off, and client review links let clients approve from a feed-style preview without an account. More on our publishing and scheduling features.
Two honest gaps. Our mobile app is on Android now, with iPhone coming soon, so iPhone-only teams will be working from the browser for a while. And if you post dozens of times a day to one brand, Buffer's unlimited paid scheduling will suit you better than our per-plan caps.

If you're switching from one of these, our Buffer alternatives and Hootsuite alternatives roundups go deeper on each. Whichever you pick, the best tool to create, schedule and publish social media posts is the one your team will actually open every morning, so use the free trial with real posts, not test text.
A quick trial checklist that works for any of the seven:
1. Connect the exact accounts you use, including any Instagram creator or business profile.
2. Schedule one Story, one Reel and one carousel, and confirm each one published without a reminder.
3. Send one post through approval with a teammate or client.
4. Make one graphic inside the tool, or time how long the Canva round trip takes.
5. Check what happens when a post fails: do you get told, and can you retry?

Frequently asked questions
What is a social media publishing tool?
It's software that publishes your posts to social networks at a time you choose, so you don't have to post manually. Most also help you write, design and approve posts first.
Which social media publishing tool is free?
Buffer, Publer, Metricool and GoBrandIt all have free plans. Limits differ: Buffer gives 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each, Metricool 1 brand with 20 posts a month, GoBrandIt 3 accounts with 15 scheduled posts.
Can these tools auto-publish Instagram Stories?
Most can, for business accounts and simple Stories. Stories with stickers, music or links fall back to a phone reminder because Instagram doesn't let third-party tools add those.
Which tool has the best approval workflow?
For large teams, Hootsuite Advanced adds approvals plus message assignment. For agencies on a budget, SocialPilot Premium includes client approval workflows, and GoBrandIt's client review links let clients approve without an account.
Do I need a separate design tool?
Not if your scheduler has one built in. GoBrandIt includes a design editor with 300+ templates; with most other tools you'll design in Canva or similar and import.
