Most "free Instagram scheduler" lists skip the question that matters: does the free plan actually publish Stories, or does it just send you a reminder? We checked every tool below against its own pricing page and help center in October 2026, so you know what's free, what auto-publishes, and where the catch is.
Our quick answer for the best free Instagram post and story scheduler: if you only post to Instagram and Facebook, use Meta Business Suite. It's free, it's Meta's own tool, and it schedules posts and Stories. If you also post to TikTok, LinkedIn or other networks, pick a free multi-network tool. Publer and Buffer give you the most queued posts on a free plan, Metricool is strong on free analytics, and GoBrandIt adds a free design tool with Story templates.
One rule applies to every third-party tool: Instagram only lets them auto-publish to professional (Business or Creator) accounts, and Stories with stickers, links or music still need a manual finish in the app.
The short version
Instagram and Facebook only? Meta Business Suite is free and schedules posts and Stories.
Need more networks? Publer and Buffer free plans allow 10 queued posts per account across 3 accounts.
No third-party tool can auto-publish Stories with stickers, links or music. Plan for that.
Later and Hootsuite don't have free plans in 2026, only 14-day trials.

Tip
"Queued" limits refill as posts go out. Ten queued posts per account is plenty if you schedule one week ahead.
1. Meta Business Suite: best for Instagram and Facebook only
Meta's own tool is where most small businesses should start. Its help center says you can schedule posts, Stories and Reels and see them on a calendar, from desktop or the mobile app, to Facebook, Instagram or both at once.
Good: free, made by Meta, posts and Stories, plus messages and insights in the same place.
Catch: your Instagram account needs to be connected to your Facebook Page, and you need to be a Page admin. It only covers Meta's networks.
Skip it if: you post to TikTok, LinkedIn or Pinterest every week. You'll end up juggling two tools.
Instagram's own app also schedules posts and Reels. Meta's help center says you can schedule up to 30 days ahead without a subscription, or up to a year with some Meta One plans. It doesn't document Story scheduling in the app, so use Business Suite for Stories.
One more thing in its favour: Meta doesn't publish a post cap for it. If you live inside Meta's apps and post daily, Business Suite will carry you a long way before a paid tool earns its fee.
2. Publer: most free scheduling room
Publer's help center says Free covers up to 3 social accounts with up to 10 scheduled posts per account at a time, and all supported post types on every network except X. Stories can publish automatically or as a reminder, so you can finish in the app when you want stickers or trending audio. Reels publish directly to Creator and Business accounts.
Good: 30 queued posts across 3 accounts, Canva integration, posting-schedule slots on the free plan.
Catch: on Free, published posts are deleted from Publer after 24 hours, drafts are capped at 25, and X can't be connected.
3. Buffer: simplest free Instagram scheduler
Buffer's free plan gives you 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel, plus its AI Assistant and community inbox. Its help center says Stories and Reels auto-publish to professional accounts when the media meets Instagram's rules. Music, text or links on Stories switch the post to a notification instead.
Good: very clean interface, a mobile app for reminder posts, and the help docs are clear about what will and won't auto-publish.
Catch: first comment scheduling and the hashtag manager are paid. Paid plans are priced per channel ($5 a month per channel on Essentials), which adds up past a handful of accounts.
4. Metricool: free scheduling plus analytics
Metricool Free covers 1 brand, up to 20 posts a month, and 30 days of analytics, with competitor tracking for 5 profiles. Its help center says feed posts, carousels, Reels and Stories can all auto-publish to business or creator accounts. Stories with links, mentions or stickers go out by notification.
Good: the best free analytics in this list, and it covers Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube and more for one brand.
Catch: LinkedIn and X aren't on the free plan, and 20 posts a month is tight if you post daily.
5. GoBrandIt: free scheduler with Story design built in
Yes, that's us, so weigh this one accordingly. GoBrandIt Free includes 3 social accounts and 15 scheduled posts, which is fewer queued posts than Publer or Buffer. Where it earns a spot is the Instagram workflow: choose feed post, Reel or Story, and use Also share to Story to send one post to the feed and Stories together. You can add Instagram collaborators and a first comment.
The free plan also includes the Social Designer, with 300+ templates including Story sizes, a Brand Kit for your logo and colours, and Nepali (Devanagari) type. Design the Story, click "Use in post", schedule it. Details are on our Instagram integration page.
Good: design and scheduling in one place, extra networks like Threads, Bluesky and Google Business Profile, and an Android app.
Catch: 15 scheduled posts on Free. The iPhone app is coming soon, not out yet.
Not free: Later and Hootsuite
Two big names often show up on free lists but don't have free plans now. Later's pricing page lists Starter at $18.75 a month billed yearly, with a 14-day trial. Hootsuite's plans page lists Standard from $99 per user a month on annual billing, also with a 14-day trial. Both are solid tools. They're just not free, so we've left them out of the ranking. If you're weighing them anyway, see our Later alternative breakdown.
How to choose the best free Instagram post and story scheduler
Run through these in order and you'll land on the right tool in five minutes:
1. Is your Instagram account professional? If not, switch it in the app first. No third-party tool can auto-publish to a personal account.
2. Do you post anywhere besides Instagram and Facebook? No: Meta Business Suite. Yes: keep reading.
3. How many posts do you queue at once? More than 15 across your accounts points to Publer or Buffer.
4. Do you design your own Stories? A built-in designer like GoBrandIt's saves a trip to another app.
5. Do you need analytics on day one? Metricool's free plan is the strongest here.
For the step-by-step setup in any of these tools, our guide on how to schedule Instagram posts covers formats, sizes and the common errors.
A word on reminder posts, since every tool here uses them. When a Story needs a poll, a link sticker or a trending sound, the scheduler sends a push notification to your phone at the set time. You open it, the media is ready, you add the sticker and post. It takes about a minute. For a Kathmandu boutique running a weekend sale, that's a fair trade: plan the week's Stories on Sunday, auto-publish the plain ones, and finish the two with links by hand.
Tip
Schedule interactive Stories (polls, links, music) as reminders and keep plain image Stories on auto. You get the reach of stickers without babysitting every post.

Frequently asked questions
Can you schedule Instagram Stories for free?
Yes. Meta Business Suite schedules Stories for free, and the free plans of Publer, Buffer, Metricool and GoBrandIt can schedule them too.
Why won't my scheduled Story auto-publish?
Instagram doesn't let third-party tools publish Stories with stickers, links, music or text added in the app. Those posts switch to a reminder you finish yourself. A personal account will also block auto-publishing.
Is Meta Business Suite really free?
Yes, it costs nothing to use for scheduling posts and Stories to your Facebook Page and connected Instagram account. Ads you run through it are paid.
Can I schedule Instagram posts from the app itself?
Yes. Instagram lets you schedule posts and Reels in the app, up to 30 days ahead without a subscription, according to Meta's help center.
Does Later have a free plan?
Not as of October 2026. Later's pricing page lists paid plans with a 14-day free trial.
